Health Reimbursement Arrangements (HRA)
A New Employer Funded Account

Health Reimbursement ArrangementsOverview
HRA is an employer funded health benefit plan where the employer controls the plan design and expenditures. In general, the employer controls:

  • Eligibility - HRAs have the same nondiscrimination rules as FSAs and POPs.
  • Type of reimbursable health care expenditures.
  • Funding - the amount, frequency of funding, carryover, etc.
  • HRAs may be implemented in conjunction with the company's medical plan or as a stand-alone program.

Participant Benefits

  • HRAs may fund both out-of-pocket medical expenses as well as health insurance premiums.
  • Unused funds may be carried over from year to year, and accumulated for future healthcare needs.
  • Employees may opt for an HRA without participating in the company's major medical plan.
